Do You Need To Redesign Your Website?

Your website might be the most aesthetically pleasing piece of work on the Internet, but if Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has not been taken into account during the design phase, you might need to totally redesign your entire website. This might come as a shocker to you especially if people tell you how cool your site looks or if you win design awards. You might also need a redesign if your website’s interface has not changed for many years. It might give people the impression that you do not care about staying current. A website that looks like it is from the 90s is definitely not good in 2011 and going forward.

A website fully created in Flash will require a redesign as soon as possible. The reason for this being SEO. Search engines cannot read the content of your website if all of it is contained in Flash elements. A full Flash website might be okay if you are a large, well-known corporation, but chances are, if you are reading this article, you aren’t a large well known company, and therefore, you should not be using Flash as your main way to display the content on your website. Similar effects can now be accomplished with techniques such as Javascript if you are really concerned about them, which will still allow your site to be indexed and read by the search engines.

Frames in your website will also require an immediate redesign due to three reasons:

  1. Frames affect your website’s SEO negatively because they cannot read the content contained in the frames, similar to how they cannot read anything contained in Flash.
  2. Another bad thing about frames is that humans have a hard time reading content presented in them as well.
  3. Some modern browsers don’t even support them as they have been deprecated, so do yourself a favor and get rid of those frames.

Splash Pages

If you don’t have a lot of traffic, and you currently have a splash page, you probably should rethink that decision, as splash pages don’t have much, if any, content for search engines to index, so no one will ever find your website. Splash pages go hand-in-hand with Flash, they are alright to have if you are popular, linked to a lot, and have no problem getting traffic. If you have these problems though, a splash page can really be detrimental.

If your website is loading slowly, and you have a good host, you are probably using too many images with large files sizes. There are many techniques to lower the file size of images, but you should consider redesigning the website to use less images and more of the modern coding technique, CSS, to accomplish the coloring you want.

There are many other reasons you might want to redesign your website, but these reasons are very relevant today as so many sites are dropping off the map and their owners are wondering why. Most of the reasons for redesign are due to SEO rather than an ugly website. There are many tutorials available on the Internet that will help you to get started on your redesign right away. You might also want to consider hiring a designer if you do not have the time or the know-how to do it yourself. In this second case, there are many freelancer websites that can be found through a simple search that will allow you to find someone within your budget with the skill you want. Whichever way you choose, you should do it as soon as possible, because keeping your website high in search engine results is the only way to keep traffic coming in in today’s Internet.
